After countless hours of roasting and cupping we think we've create a new coffee that perfectly fills out our 100% Hawaiian origin line up. We medium roast the beans and find that they produce a cup that is bright and smooth - unique and different from both our 100% Moloka'i coffees, and our 100% Kona coffee. Give it a try and let us know what you think.

And what's in the name? Pōhaku O Kā'anapali. Many of you have probably vacationed in Maui and seen the above outcrop of rocks on Ka'anapali Beach. There is a story behind those "cliffs". The name and the legend bely our approach to this coffee. You can read the full legend here.

First a tropical storm, now a fire.

In case you weren't following the news, there was a brush fire on Moloka'i last weekend that spread to 8,000 acres below our plantation on the slopes above Kaunakakai. It is now over 80% contained and our plantation is safe.

How many more bullets will we have to dodge this growing season?! We just want to grow quality coffee in peace...

Dodging a Bullet...

As many of you may have followed in the news, Hurricane Felicia was targeting the islands in a big way earlier in the week. High winds and torrential rains were the LAST thing we needed as our coffee crop continues to mature.

Thankfully, "Hurricane Felicia" became "Tropical Storm Felicia" and by the time it hit Kualapu'u it had weakened considerably. Three inches of rain - much needed rain - were all that we got out of it so a potential curse became a blessing. The sun came out and our beans were intact.

We had a fabulous time selling our coffee at the "Escape from Alcatraz" expo in San Francisco a few weeks ago. The weather was gorgeous and thousands of visitors enjoyed sipping the 'aina!
We have a few cases of coffee left over and it makes no sense to ship them back to our plantation in Moloka'i. And of course we aren't going to fill online orders with them. When we say we roast your order fresh when we receive it, we mean it.

Escape from Alcatraz

Transpac 2009!

We are extremely proud to be the offical coffee of this year's Transpac. Our coffee will be on each boat making the journey from Newport Beach to Waikiki!

Here's a quick history from their website:

A Brief History of the Transpacific Yacht Race

With 44 races starting in 1906, the Transpacific Yacht Race to Hawaii is well into its second century as the longest of the two oldest ocean races in the world. The first race was the year of the great San Francisco earthquake, which literally altered the course of the event.

The race was inspired by King Kalakaua, the revered Hawaiian leader of the late 19th century who believed that such an event would strengthen the islands' economic and cultural ties to the mainland. But it didn't happen until Clarence MacFarlane, a Honolulu racing sailor, invited several contemporaries in San Francisco and Los Angeles to race to the Hawaiian Islands. The race was scheduled to start in the early summer of 1906, but when MacFarlane sailed his 48-foot schooner into San Francisco Bay he realized there would have to be a change of plans. The city lay in ruins following the great earthquake 27 days earlier.

But MacFarlane wasn't easily discouraged. He simply changed the starting point to Los Angeles, and except for one nostalgic return to San Francisco for the start in 1939, the race has started in Southern California ever since. The starting line is now off the bluffs of Point Fermin in San Pedro at the southern edge of the City of Los Angeles. The finish is off the Diamond Head lighthouse just east of Honolulu, establishing a distance of 2,225 nautical miles.

The cycle of coffee renews itself in various forms on our plantation. The first buds have started appearing....the first step toward flowering and the setting of cherries for next year's harvest.

Just as important is the renewal of coffee trees through pruning. It may seem counter-productive but pruning the trees all the way down to their stumps is actually the quickest, most productive way to generate new, high-yielding growth. We'll post photos of these stumps a year from now. You won't recognize them!

Ah, the sweetness of vanilla. We use only natural vanilla in our "Moloka'i Island Princess" coffee and the subtle sweetness is outstanding. We recently had the opportunity to buy some special vanilla pods grown on the Big Island by "Nursery Solutions". Most people have seen dried vanilla pods in the store. Shriveled up and brown. Here's what they look like in full bloom (to be fertilized individually by hand!), as well as the green pods before harvest. Read their notes to gain a true understanding of the effort that went into growing these beans.

We had the opportunity to check in on our coffee-drinking crews of the "Green Dragon" and "Ericsson" Volvo Ocean Race teams in Singapore last week. They were doing some in-port racing before they depart on the next leg to Qindao, China.

Christmas Light Parade

Roasting Room - Our Diedrich Roaster in Action

Our video skills aren't great but we're going to try and get into a routine of filming different operations at our Kualapu'u plantation.

Above is our Diedrich Roaster, just as the beans are finishing their roast and dumping into the cooling tray. As the beans are dumped, cool air is sucked from the bottom of the cooling tray, thereby rapidly cooling off the beans that are coming out of the roaster at well over 350 degrees. After 30 seconds or so one can pick up a bean and it already cool.

Just think if we could do this with cookies coming out of our oven - we wouldn't have to wait so long to eat them!

As you can see from the photo above our orchards continue to mature and we are now harvesting a higher and higher percentage of overripe beans - note the dark skins. These are the beans that make our famous "Muleskinner".

What's the difference between our "natural dried" and "washed" arabica coffees?

We were asked yesterday by a visitor what the difference is between our "natural dried arabica" Muleskinner Coffee and our "washed arabica" Malulani Estate Coffee. Here's a quick explanation. On Moloka'i, we have the benefit of drier, cooling breezes and less rainfall than Kona. That allows us to overripen a percentage of our crop on the trees. We harvest the overripe beans along with our ripe beans and after a quick separation of the beans in our wet mill the overripe beans are immediately taken to our drying fields to dry - in their husks. Our "washed" arabica beans have their husks removed in the wet milling process and after a short period of fermentation are also taken to the drying fields where they are dried.

Once the beans have completed drying they are stored in our cool and dry warehouse. The stored in-husk overripe beans develop a unique flavor over a specific period of time and the husks are then milled off. It is this delicate and subjective process - like winemaking - that is what makes our "Muleskinner" totally unique from any other Hawaiian coffee. If you have yet to drink our Muleskinner, stay patient. It is currently sold out but will be available in late 2008 after our new harvest.

Pruning for Renewal

The definition of pruning is : to remove (anything considered superfluous or undesirable).

As part of our orchard management we are constantly renewing growth. Coffee trees over time grow limbs, branches and other superfluous growth that inhibit sunlight and affect bean growth, quantity and quality.

At times it can seem counterintuitive. The photo above is an extreme example. It is of a tree that was stumped TO THE GROUND in 2005 when we were cleaning up and restoring the abandoned fields. Talk about rebirth and renewal!

School is out and summer is here on Moloka'i. Couple images of what that means for us.

First, a photo of Desiree Cabreros and Whitnelle Hooper. Desiree, on the left, is our tour director.
Whitnelle is one of our baristas. They both just graduated from Maui Community College.
Both are moms and full time employees. Visit the plantation and meet them!

Second, a photo of Cole Mosher (age 15), a local swimming "phenom". He's modeling a swim cap that will be at Kona Ironman World Championships later this year - stay tuned! He's also swimming at Papohaku Beach....a beautiful stretch of sand that is 3 miles long on the west end. Not unusual to have the whole beach to yourself...

Quality Isn't Easy!

Coffee drinkers ask us how time and again, "How do you grow such great quality?" Growing the beans in an ideal climate and soil is only one part of the equation. Milling and sorting them to ensure that the outstanding quality makes it to your cup isn't easy. One bad bean can ruin a cup. Considering that 50 beans are ground to make one cup, those are daunting odds.

A key tool we have is our color sorter. In the above photo, William Luloa is doing some fine tuning on our color sorter. Green beans are rapidly fed through a narrow tube one-by-one and compared against a set color background. If the color doesn't match then a computer shoots a quick blast of air that knocks the "bad bean" out of the sequence. The bad bean is destined for the trash bucket.

In the espresso bar at our plantation on Moloka‘i, Gay is showing how we are doing our part to minimize trash on the island. Earth Friendly products include containers made from sugar cane fiber and corn starch. Products biodegrade in as little as 30-90 days! That’s quick and helps our local landfill.

In buying coffee from our online store you can choose the Tyvek envelope option as well. Fully recycleable.

Grading Green Beans

Coffee beans come in all shapes and sizes....and thus, different "grades". An inspector from the Hawaiian Department of Agriculture visited us last week to take samples of the different coffee grades we have recently milled. The samples were taken to his lab to be tested for moisture and size and certification was just received. Our 50 pound green bean bags were certified/tagged and are now rolling out the door. Next time you see a green bean burlap sack in a coffee store, ask to see its grading tag! What does it say....

Start of our Maui Coffee Plantation...

It's been a long time coming but our Maui coffee production is slowly taking shape. As you can see from the photo we have started grading the hillside - what once was pineapple will now be coffee! Irrigation lines and planted windbreaks will be next and seedlings should be ready to plant in approximately 5 months. Stay tuned!

Our Kualapu'u, Moloka'i Coffee Nursery

Spring is here on Molokai and it will soon be time to plant new coffee trees. Ever wonder what a coffee tree starts from? Enjoy the photos of our germinating beans - all 60,000 of them....they'll be ready to be planted in a couple months.

The tall stalks in the photo below are Wiliwili trees that will be used for windbreaks.

A Visit to Kalaupapa

On February 21 I had the opportunity to hike down the trail to the Kalaupapa Peninsula and present a donation check to Gloria Marks of the Kalaupapa Ohana Patient Council. We have designated 1% of the sales of our “Muleskinner” coffee to the Patient Council to help residents with incidental expenses when they travel off-island for medical treatment. Our “Muleskinner” label depicts the historical muleskinners who served the colony, as well as illustrating images of the Catholic Church and Father Damien statue in Kalawao. Our use of the images received the blessing and authority of the Kalaupapa Ohana Council in 2007 and have helped to underscore Coffees of Hawaii's authenticity and respect for Hawaii’s history.
